Players take a lot of pride in their CS:GO ranks. That shiny badge on your profile is what your countless hours in competitive matchmaking, learning precise smoke placements, and coordinating with others is all for. Despite how much players fret over their skill group level, there’s not a lot of clear information out there explaining how CS:GO ranks actually work. Generally, improving your skills and winning matches will eventually see you ascend the ladder, but Valve remains tight-lipped about the inner workings of CS:GO’s ranking system.
To help you understand this system better, I’ve collected the best-available information from Valve and a variety of other sources.
It also made it tougher for lower-rank friends to catch up in Competitive because it considered everyone equal. The new system rewards.
Competitive Mode is an official game mode released for Team Fortress 2. The mode is accessible only by having a Premium TF2 account, a valid phone number linked to their Steam account and must be at least level 3 in Casual Mode. Store to gain access. If a player is eligible for Competitive Matchmaking but has a VAC ban on their account, the only way to obtain access is to buy a pass from the Mann Co. Competitive Mode is a more refined version of the Casual game modes.
As a result, it is much less chaotic and random in nature than Casual matches. Each player is able to level up their rank depending on their performance and the outcome of the match. It is also possible to lose rank levels, a common example being a user performing poorly during a match and losing their rank due to their performance. Once players join the game, they will have the option to mark themselves as “ready” to start the match similarly to the Mann vs. Machine game mode once enough players have joined.
Once a player marks themselves as ready, a timer will start counting down to the match start. Players leaving a Competitive match mid-game receive a Matchmaking cooldown punishment which prevents them from playing Matchmaking for a limited time.

In the past, we have released a post touching on how the MMR system works. We are updating it to properly reflect the current system in Rainbow Six Siege. Your skill represents your ability to win a game. Comparing two teams’ skill gives you the probability that one team will win against the other. The higher the difference, the more likely a given team is going to win.
When two teams with the same skill levels are matched up with each other, they both have an equal shot at winning. The estimation of your skill is probabilistic. In general, the more games you play, the more information we have about you, and the more confident we are about this estimation. The lower the uncertainty, the higher the confidence. This led to confusion as the play experiences of players of different ranks would vary greatly. This also means that your clearance level has no impact on your MMR.
The MMR is updated solely on the outcome of your match. If this outcome is unexpected for example, you lost against players with a lower skill than your team , the skill updates will be more substantial, and vice-versa.
How to Rank Up in CS:GO: Ranks, Ranking System, Trust Factor
We understand that some players, especially at the high end, have experienced a significant drop in matchmaking quality as a result of our recent iterations. We are committed to making matchmaking as good as it can be. For any party that includes an Immortal player, every player in that party will be considered the same rank as the highest player in that party. We think this trade-off is worthwhile at this high level, however, because matches are unlikely to be of high quality anyways with extremely disparate skill levels within a party given the shallow pool available.
Such disparity has often made the games less fun for most players involved.
How does Elo work? Chapter 3, CS:GO Ranks Explained. Chapter 4, Factors for Ranking Up and Down. What’s inside?
For what appears at first glance to be a rather straightforward first-person shooter, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is a rabbit hole. There is always more to learn about CS:GO, from weapons to systems to trick of the trade, and rankings are no exception. To an amateur player, CSGO ranks can feel confusing and inaccessible.
However, the CSGO ranking system is not quite as confusing as it initially appears. CSGO rankings can be understood rather easily if you look in the right place. The CS:GO leveling system runs from 1 to 40 , and that initial system is only used as a tool to reward players with cosmetic skins and service medals during gameplay. When you have played a great deal, these service medals change color every 40 times you rank up in a year. Players can reach level two in order to unlock competitive matchmaking by playing Valve-created game modes.
Gaining access to matchmaking is the first big step.
Elo Ranking Guide: Understanding How CS:GO Matchmaking Works
A comprehensive matchmaking system is an important factor in being able to enjoy playing Dota, regardless of which hero or role you prefer. Matchmaking involves various tradeoffs and our goal is to find the best balance between all the different factors. There are two major aspects with this change: 1 the teamplay and social aspect and 2 the value and correctness of the MMR value. For the teamplay aspect: We think it is really crucial for you to not have a disincentive to play with your friends.
Before you play matchmaking matches, you will need to know these simple tips: Win your competitive matches to up your rank in CS:GO.
Today I want to talk about it in detail — how are CS:GO ranks really calculated and which factors have an impact on ranking up and down. The Elo-System was originally defined in chess. Maybe you already heard of Glicko-2 before? Glicko-2 is a rating system that is used in CS:GO, just like the Elo from chess but it goes deeper and adds two more variables:. This means Valve is not just taking the standard values, they add more numbers and attributes to the calculation to be more accurate.
Of course, the Glicko-2 Elo system is just the base and Valve adapted more things, Counterstrike Global Offensive is a complex game with a lot of aspects to consider. Valve is taking care which information they give out to the players, to prevent them from abusing the system. Because then, players just focus on how to win and disregard teamplay and of course to just have fun. Also, they prevent the community from CS:GO boosting, where higher players try to get worse players up to higher ranks fast.
This is a real problem in every matchmaking system because it dislocates the real rank and Elo basis of a player. As you can imagine a matchmaking system is interested in giving players a good time, so that one side is not favored extremely.
